Bergeys Manual of Determinative Bacteriology by John G. Holt

Based on the data contained in the four-volume Bergeys Manual of Systematic Bacteriology, BMDB-9 also includes new genera and species, new combinations, and new taxa published through the January 1992 issue of the IJSB. Users will find short general descriptions that encompass all organisms by Groups; shape and size, Gram reaction, other pertinent morphological features, motility and flagella, relations to oxygen, basic type of metabolism, carbon and energy sources, habitat and ecology. BMDB-9 also includes discussions of difficulties in identification, keys or tables to genera and species, genus descriptions, synonyms, other nomenclatural changes, and numerous illustrations.

The manual was published subsequent to the Bergey's Manual of Determinative Bacteriology , though the latter is still published as a guide for identifying unknown bacteria. However, this process has become more empirical in recent years. The change in volume set to " Systematic Bacteriology " came in a new contract in , whereupon the new style included "relationships between organisms" and had "expanded scope" overall. This new style was picked up for a four-volume set [6] that first began publishing in The information in the volumes was separated as:.

Bergey's Manual of Systematics of Archaea and Bacteria BMSAB is a reference work aimed at undergraduates, graduate students, researchers, professors and experienced professionals at all levels. To remain abreast of this explosion in knowledge of the microbial world, an electronic manual with frequent updates is necessary. Bergey's is the most complete and authoritative description of bacterial and archaeal diversity. Now available online for the first time, this edition provides descriptions of the taxonomy, systematics, ecology, physiology and other biological properties of all described prokaryotic taxa. This is a new, unique, single point of online reference for microbiology with over 1, articles — equivalent to over 8 volumes in print.

Includes introductory chapters on classification of prokaryotes, the concept of bacterial species, numerical and polyphasic taxonomy, bacterial nomenclature and the etymology of prokaryotic names, nucleic acid probes and their application in environmental microbiology, culture collections, and the intellectual property of prokaryotes. The first Road Map to the prokaryotes is included as well as an overview of the phylogenetic backbone and taxonomic framework for prokaryotic systematics.
