Out of My Mind Quotes by Sharon M. Draper
Why Can’t I Shut Off My Mind?
We all have those moments or weeks or days! Our constant stream of thought is running the show. It can be agony. Meditators know that we are not our thoughts. It just means that I had a fleeting angry thought. We all have them. Mantras are tremendously helpful, as they can instantly center us.
When music psychologist Kelly Jakubowski and her colleagues studied why, they found these songs were faster and simpler in melodic contour the pitch rose and fell in ways that made them easier to sing. And the music also had some unique intervals between notes that made the song stand out. In order to get stuck in your head, earworms rely on brain networks that are involved in perception, emotion, memory, and spontaneous thought. They are typically triggered by actually hearing a song , though they may also creep up on you when you are feeling good , or when you are in a dreamy inattentive or nostalgic state. And they may also show up when you are stressed about having too much to think about. Also, if you have a musical background , you may be more susceptible to earworms too.
Intrusive memories, when persistent and distressing, are theorized to underlie a range of transdiagnostic psychological symptoms and associated impairment. However, little is known about factors predicting the development and persistence of intrusive memories. The aim of this systematic review is to evaluate the literature on pre-event, event-based, and post-event predictors of intrusive memories. A systematic review was conducted, searching for studies that examined intrusive, event-based memories. Pre-existing psychopathology and pre-event appraisal style appear to predict intrusive memories small to medium effects , whereas trait dissociation did not predict intrusive memories. Of studies examining event-based predictors, higher data-driven processing appears to predict intrusive memories with generally large effects. Post-event negative appraisals consistently predicted intrusive memories medium to large effects , and preliminary evidence suggests higher post-event conceptual processing predicting fewer intrusive memories.
