He is a stalwart leading man with a solid fanbase, but to me he always seems too mannered for the small screen. I t came full circle in this new episode, the first of two feature-length films, neither of which were written by series creator Peter Flannery. It yielded a pair of affecting performances from Anamaria Marinca and Victoria Bewick as a mother and daughter sundered by a miscarriage of justice.

The episode, Gently and the New Age, brought this curmudgeonly, last-of-his-kind man of honour slap up against the cynical new politics of the Seventies. Meanwhile, Bacchus was investigating the murder of a journalist on a picket line and the two stories steadily coalesced into one highly charged investigation. The climax came in a supremely atmospheric beachside shooting that brought Gently back into the light of his beloved Isabella, and ensured that this really would be his last appearance on screen. It was a sad but entirely worthy close to a series that despite many great qualities never quite got the acclaim it often deserved.
