When the Beat Was Born: DJ Kool Herc and the Creation of Hip Hop by Laban Carrick Hill

Before there was hip hop, there was DJ Kool Herc.

On a hot day at the end of summer in 1973 Cindy Campbell threw a back-to-school party at a park in the South Bronx. Her brother, Clive Campbell, spun the records. He had a new way of playing the music to make the breaks—the musical interludes between verses—longer for dancing. He called himself DJ Kool Herc and this is When the Beat Was Born. From his childhood in Jamaica to his youth in the Bronx, heres how Kool Herc came to be a DJ, how kids in gangs stopped fighting in order to breakdance, and how the music he invented went on to define a culture and transform the world.

Want to Become a Red Cross Volunteer? This is What It's Like.

Quotes Using Words Volunteer/Volunteering

I like the influence and responsibility the Red Cross has become known for. The door that nobody else will go in at, seems always to swing open widely for me. The Red Cross in its nature, it aims and purposes, and consequently, its methods, is unlike any other organization in the country. It is an organization of physical action, of instantaneous action, at the spur of the moment; it cannot await the ordinary deliberation of organized bodies if it would be of use to suffering humanity,[ellipsis in original] it has by its nature a field of its own. Whether it is a call to action for blood drives, disaster relief, or just community outreach, the American Red Cross does an extraordinary job at not only meeting the immediate needs of a community, but also the preparation and planning for long-term support. The Red Cross is an organization that responds to those in need and it is an honor to help them with the lifesaving role they play everyday in communities nationwide.

What We Do

I truly believe I was sent there for a purpose. Other than the Red Cross, fate sent me there to help my brother. We should be able to house or more people there, if that many stay. We got an e-mail before we got here and the Red Cross needs , meals a day for 90 days and possibly , meals a day for 90 days. The money will go to the Red Cross or any other organization people can write checks to.

Share your favorite quotes about volunteers and volunteering so that others can add a spark to their presentations! Volunteering is so pervasive it's invisible. We take for granted all the things that have been pioneered by concerned, active volunteers. The greatest good you can do for another is not just share your riches, but reveal to him his own. The moral test of a society is how that society treats those who are in the dawn of life -- the children; those who are in the twilight of life -- the elderly; and those who are in the shadow of life -- the sick, the needy, and the handicapped. Everybody can be great.
