A Girl Called Renee: The Incredible Story of a Holocaust Survivor
They depress me. I even get nightmares. Some of these books beckoned and drew me in, reluctant reader that I was, on this subject. I had checked out a pile of his books and bought this last unread one on a train ride. I wanted something lighter and uplifting. I would suggest these books, even the picture books, for ages 10 and up. The Holocaust is a subject for an older child.
This is the unbelievable autobiographical story of Ruth Uzrad, a Jewish teenager whose life was turned upside down by the Nazi regime. Later, when the Nazis conquer Belgium, Ruth and one of her sisters escape to France, leaving the youngest sister behind to be taken in by a Belgian foster family. Later, Ruth joins the Jewish underground movement in France and takes on a false identity and a new name, Renee. As an underground fighter, she participates in special operations aimed at rescuing Jews in danger. When the German police set out to arrest her, she manages to cross the border into Spain and eventually makes her way to Israel, where she makes her home and spends the rest of her life.
Night is the archetypal Holocaust novel, in many ways more an experience that you have, rather than a book that you read. Its author, Elie Wiesel, was born in what is now Romania and survived several concentration camps, and in Night , he puts into hauntingly beautiful words all of the terrible events, whether physical, mental, or emotional, that he had to survive. This award-winning young adult novel is more than just a book for children. Told from the perspective of a German girl whose foster family agrees to hide a young Jewish boy — and narrated by the ever-present Death — The Book Thief explores all of the same themes that you expect from a book about the Holocaust — morality, love, and identity. Read in disbelief as the children growing up in such a terrible time struggle to figure out their role to play in it all. World War II ravaged not only the Jewish communities in Europe, but also any other places where the Nazis had control. A couple of Czech and Slovak paratroopers however, went on a mission to assassinate him — and this is the story of that event.
